Hey all – I’m in the process of writing our chapter application for a grant from Patagonia and I’m looking for input from our chapter members.
The application theme is an attempt to reduce the number of cigarette butts we all see laying around. The initial thought was to focus on freeway onramps where people wait in the morning and flick or dump butts there. We need the project to have measurable outcomes of success to get funded, something like, a Butt Count (not ours), before and after to see how we did.
Anyway, I’m all ears for ideas before we send something in! Respond here on the blog (cool) or email me at jcperry13@gmail.com.

We should get some statistics on just how bad the butt littering problem is, whether numbers from our own state, or perhaps from the “Hold Onto Your Butt” campaigns carried out by Surfrider Chapters in other parts of the country. Another thought: maybe we can get a local TV station to shoot video of drivers waiting at on-ramps, or stoplights at off-ramps, to illustrate how bad the problem is — and also to get some publicity for our campaign.
