About

The Minnesota-Superior Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation was formed in 2008 by a group of longtime local surfers and activists who are committed to protecting our freshwater waves, beaches, and shorelines.  Please join us!

What is the Surfrider Foundation? It’s a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research, and education. Read more about the organization here. Surfrider has more than 50,000 members and 60 local chapters in the U.S. (plus additional international affiliates). Our chapter is the “Minnesota-Superior Chapter,” which serves Minnesota and the shores of Lake Superior, so people in Wisconsin are welcome to join us as well.

Why a Surfrider Chapter in Minnesota? Because, surprisingly, there are actually hundreds of people in the Upper Midwest who surf, whether here on Lake Superior or around the world (or both!) – and who believe in the principles and mission of the Surfrider Foundation! And our state boasts many sailboarders, wakeboarders, kiteboarders, skateboarders, kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders, and others who also support our cause. Many Minnesotans have actually been Surfrider members for several years. We share a love of water, waves, beaches, and coastlines – of all types: oceans, lakes, or rivers!  Did you know Minnesota has more coastline than California, Hawaii, and Florida combined? We want to make a difference in protecting our environment, both worldwide and here in Minnesota!
